Canary Wharf – Projection Mapped City
My first job contracting for Seeper was SeeCity for the Canary Wharf Marketing suite. The purpose of this projection was to wow potential investors in Canary Wharf real estate. I was initially brought onto the project to help model buildings for the CGI model used to light, texture and map the physical model, but was very quickly given the entire realistic night and day scene due to my knowledge in texture baking and render optimisations. I was able to bring down the render time of a single frame from 30 minutes, to 59 seconds, which over 75,000 frames is a serious cost reduction. Eventually I was responsible for caretaking all of the rendered content, was one of 3 or 4 artists who did the alignment of the projectors/content in Hippo and I’m fairly sure I gained muscle mass from the amount of hard drives I carried around. Past that it really isn’t worth me explaining how it works, this project is a one in a million, every part of it is the most complex thing I have every worked on physically, and will never be attempted by anyone again. It utilised every bit of my 2017 knowledge, it was my first introduction to projection mapping after leaving the games industry, and I honestly loved every second… Even when falling asleep on the train at 6:30am to go home after aligning a tiny building for 14 hours that no one would ever notice. Way ahead of it’s time, ask me if you want more info 😀
